Pic: Mick Burgess.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judging by the plethora of anniversary shows doing the rounds at the moment, 1979 looks to have been something of a vintage year for music and none more so than for the ground-breaking Coventry based Two-Tone label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blending Jamaican ska and peggae with the rebellious spirit of punk, Two-Tone ruled the airwaves over the next couple of years, with <strong>The Specials<\/strong>, <strong>Madness<\/strong>, <strong>The Beat<\/strong> and <strong>Bad Manners<\/strong> all making regular appearances on Top Of the Pops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joining them at the top table were <strong>The Selecter<\/strong>, fronted by the enigmatic <strong>Pauline Black<\/strong>, and tonight was a celebration of their 40<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;anniversary, as well as a nod to their Two-Tone contemporaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-2.jpg?resize=640%2C469\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C751&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-2.jpg?resize=300%2C220&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-2.jpg?resize=768%2C563&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-2.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-2.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Pauline Black of The Selecter performing at the Boiler Shop in Newcastle on the band&#8217;s 40th anniversary tour. Pic: Mick Burgess.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the brief intro of The Avengers Theme it was non-stop skanking to the beat from the second <strong>Three Minute Hero<\/strong> kicked into life as the Boiler Shop erupted into a unified mass of dancing, ska-style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a formidable catalogue of hits like <strong>Missing Words<\/strong>, <strong>Too Much Pressure<\/strong> and the dancefloor-busting <strong>On My Radio<\/strong>, along with some classic cuts from their debut album, such as <strong>The Whisper<\/strong> and <strong>Murder<\/strong>, as well as <strong>Celebrate The Bullet<\/strong> from the follow-up, The Selecter were unstoppable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t all nostalgia, however, as <strong>Frontline<\/strong>, the cool, lilting reggae groove of <strong>Remember Me<\/strong> and <strong>Breakdown <\/strong>(the heir apparent to <strong>Ghost Town<\/strong> and quite possibly the best ska song you\u2019ll hear in a decade) showed that the fire of rebellion and biting social commentary has not diminished over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-16.jpg?resize=640%2C469\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-16.jpg?resize=1024%2C751&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-16.jpg?resize=300%2C220&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-16.jpg?resize=768%2C563&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-16.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/The-Selecter-16.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Pauline Black of The Selecter performing at the Boiler Shop in Newcastle on the band&#8217;s 40th anniversary tour. Pic: Mick Burgess.<\/strong><br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joining the fun was <strong>Rhoda Dakar<\/strong> from <strong>The Bodysnatchers<\/strong>, who performed her own mini set including <strong>Let&#8217;s Do The Rock Steady<\/strong> before Black and Gaps joined her for <strong>Madness<\/strong>, the traditional set closer on the original Two-Tone Tour in 1979 and <strong>Can&#8217;t Get Used To Losing You<\/strong>, a poignant tribute to the recently-departed <strong>Ranking Roger<\/strong> from <strong>The Beat<\/strong>.
