Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s long been acknowledged \u2013 if not by the music establishment \u2013 that Sheffield singer-songwriter <strong>Richard Hawley<\/strong> is a national treasure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This unspoken truism has been the case since the mid-noughties, even before <strong>Alex Turner<\/strong> of the <strong>Arctic Monkeys<\/strong>, collecting the <strong>Mercury Prize<\/strong> for their debut album in 2006, exclaimed: Someone call 999, Richard Hawley\u2019s been robbed!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hawley was on the fringes of <strong>Britpop<\/strong>, as guitarist with <strong>Longpigs<\/strong>, and late-era <strong>Pulp<\/strong>, but it\u2019s as a solo artist that he\u2019s made his name, releasing his first album in 2001. After that Mercury nomination for <strong>Coles Corner<\/strong> in 2006 there was a second nomination for 2012\u2019s <strong>Standing At the Sky\u2019s Edge<\/strong>, a much darker, heavier album than anything he\u2019d done before. Needless to say, he didn\u2019t win. He didn\u2019t win the <strong>Brit Award<\/strong> for Best British Male Solo Artist which he was nominated for either in 2013, but the lack of recognition doesn\u2019t seem to bother him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hawley9.jpg?resize=640%2C457\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hawley9.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hawley9.jpg?resize=300%2C214&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Richard Hawley performing at Northumbria University in Newcastle. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hawley, whose inspiration comes from the city where he was born and his love of \u201850s and \u201860s rockabilly, continues to plough his own furrow, with results that never fail to impress. At the end of May he released <strong>Further<\/strong>, his eighth solo record. Much more upbeat than his last couple of offerings, it reached No 3 in the UK charts. Were the masses catching on at last to this wonderful talent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the tour to promote the record (<a href=\"http:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=167\"><strong>reviewed here<\/strong><\/a>), tonight\u2019s setlist leans heavily on Further, with nine of the 18 songs played tonight drawn from it. The only disappointment was that two of my favourites, <strong>My Little Treasures<\/strong> and <strong>Not Lonely<\/strong>, were the ones that didn\u2019t make the cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show began with Further\u2019s grungy opening track, and it was clear that Hawley and his regular band &#8211; including <strong>Shez Sheridan<\/strong> on guitar and <strong>Colin Elliott<\/strong> on bass \u2013 were on top form, with Hawley\u2019s baritone croon in splendid nick. The frontman was relaxed, sharing banter with the audience, and asking his bandmates to \u2018pass that phrasebook\u2019 when there were shout-outs he didn\u2019t quite catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hawley2.jpg?resize=640%2C457\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hawley2.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hawley2.jpg?resize=300%2C214&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Richard Hawley performing at Northumbria University in Newcastle. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alone <\/strong>and the title track of the new album followed, and then there was a change of pace for a brooding, magnificent <strong>Standing At the Sky\u2019s Edge<\/strong>. The skiffle beat of<strong> I\u2019m Looking For Someone To Find Me<\/strong>, from the Lady\u2019s Bridge album, was next, followed by Further\u2019s wistful ballad <strong>Emilina Says<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tonight The Streets Are Ours<\/strong> is a song which is steeped in nostalgia, yet absolutely timeless; it could have been written at any point in the past 60 years, and still sound utterly beguiling, and it was up there as one of the high points of this show. Dipping into his rich back catalogue, he gave us another classic in <strong>Coles Corner<\/strong>, before returning to new material with the lovely, lilting <strong>Midnight Train<\/strong> and <strong>Galley Girl<\/strong>, which was much heavier than on the record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hawley10.jpg?resize=640%2C457\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hawley10.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hawley10.jpg?resize=300%2C214&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Richard Hawley performing at Northumbria University in Newcastle. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another Further track, <strong>Time Is<\/strong>, featured a fantastic harmonica solo from <strong>Clive Mellor<\/strong>, while the penultimate song of the main set, an extended psychedelic version of <strong>Down In The Woods<\/strong>, was another contender for &nbsp;highlight of the night, proving \u2013 if ever there was any doubt \u2013 that this band can rock out, as well as tiptoeing down the path marked deep and soulful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A two-song encore followed, of <strong>There\u2019s A Storm Comin\u2019<\/strong> from the excellent <strong>False Lights From The Land EP<\/strong> and <strong>Heart Of Oak<\/strong>, the only song from his previous album <strong>Hollow Meadows<\/strong>. Well-earned bows duly taken, Hawley promised he\u2019d see us again \u201csome time\u201d.
