{"id":12274,"date":"2025-07-05T15:20:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-05T14:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=12274"},"modified":"2025-07-08T15:21:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T14:21:10","slug":"jools-fulfil-their-early-promise-with-debut-album-violent-delights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=12274","title":{"rendered":"Jools fulfil their early promise with debut album Violent Delights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">ALBUM REVIEW: Jools &#8211; Violent Delights (Hassle Records)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jools <\/strong>are a noise-rock band from Leicester who got together in 2019 and, after releasing four digital-only singles and a solitary 7in, have now unleashed their debut album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The six-piece describe themselves as a punk collective, but that&#8217;s reflected in their attitude rather than their sound, as these songs meld everything from post-punk to hip-hop and garage rock to post-hardcore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Co-vocalists Kate Price and Mitch Gordon, guitarists Chris Johnston and Callum Connachie, bassist Joe Dodd and drummer Chelsea Wrones certainly kick up an impressive racket, but there&#8217;s moments of reflection too as they explore themes of grief, rage, desire and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spoken word intro of opener <em>The Pleasure<\/em>s reminds me of Benefits before the big guitars kick in, and <em>Limerence <\/em>is a song about desire and how it can border on obsession. You can sense the pent-up tension as Price sings: &#8220;Tingling for you, are you tingling for me too or am I being too brash?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cardinal <\/em>is about finding your own identity and delighting in confusing haters: &#8220;I have him rattled\/Lace and leather has him baffled\/I have him straddled\/His brain cells are my fucking saddle.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing up around religion is the subject of <em>Mother Monica<\/em>, which has a deliciously dirty riff, and you can hear the confliction as the co-vocalist plead: &#8220;Oh god, make me good\/But just not yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/jools.jpg?resize=640%2C422\" alt=\"jools\" class=\"wp-image-12277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/jools.jpg?resize=1024%2C675&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/jools.jpg?resize=300%2C198&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/jools.jpg?resize=768%2C506&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/jools.jpg?w=1164&amp;ssl=1 1164w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The toxicity of alcohol addiction is explored on <em>Dunoon<\/em>, while sexual violence against women is the topic of previous single <em>97%<\/em>, and its message is stark: &#8220;Tell them to smile, because it might never happen\/But it has and it does and it will.&#8221; &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m hearing hints of IDLES and Shame here, as well as the influence of artists like Turnstile and The Streets&#8217; Mike Skinner. The co-vocalist dynamic is an interesting one too, as Price and Gordon\u2019s vocals are at times interwoven, while going off on their own tangents at others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s plenty to enjoy here, and I like their confrontational attitude a lot. <strong>7.5\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ALBUM
