ALBUM REVIEW: Grade 2 \u2013 Graveyard Island (Hellcat Records)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Formed on the Isle of Wight in 2013, when its members were just 15, Grade 2 are one of the brightest up and coming bands in the UK punk scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sid Ryan (bass and vocals), Jack Chatfield (guitar and vocals) and Jacob Hull (drums) quickly discovered their options on a small island were limited, so jumped on a ferry bound for the mainland, before venturing further afield, for shows in Europe and, lately, the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through solid touring and a couple of decent albums, 2016\u2019s Mainstream View<\/strong> and the following\nyear\u2019s Break The Routine<\/strong>, they\nstarted to make a name for themselves. Both had their moments, but to me,\ndidn\u2019t come close to capturing how they sound live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While on tour, Grade 2 met Lars Frederiksen<\/strong>, the rhythm guitarist with legendary US punks Rancid<\/strong>. He thought about producing\ntheir third album, but in the end passed them on to his bandmate Tim Armstrong<\/strong>. The man once described\nas \u201cthe Bob Dylan of punk\u201d agreed to produce the record, and signed them to his\nlabel, Hellcat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last December, Grade 2 flew to Los Angeles, and, over the course of two weeks, tracked the dozen songs that make up Graveyard Island<\/strong>. The resulting record is their best yet \u2013 by some distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Full of anger and energy, it\u2019s an album which wouldn\u2019t have sounded out\nof place in 1977, yet it\u2019s very modern at the same time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grade 2 started out as an oi! band, but that makes them sound much more\none-dimensional than they are. Yes, their message is delivered with passion and\nno little aggression, but it\u2019s also tuneful, with plenty of melody. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like most of the best punk albums Graveyard Island is short and sharp:\nonly two of the 12 songs clock in at over three minutes, and four of them don\u2019t\neven last for two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opening track Tired Of It<\/strong> is an upbeat, strident two-fingered salute to the giant corporations who track our every move through the devices we’ve come to rely on: \u201cI\u2019m tired of it, they\u2019re full of shit, when they say, privacy\u2019s a privilege\u201d .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closing track, On The Radar<\/strong> also deals with the same issue, and delivers a response in no uncertain terms: \u201cThey know what you say, they know where you\u2019ve been \u2026  fuck you, get out of my life!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look Up<\/strong> is a very commercial-sounding song \u2013 a possible single perhaps? \u2013 while Murder Town<\/strong> bears the unmistakeable stamp of Tim Armstrong, particularly in the chorus. They’re not bad songs, but the best is yet to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dover Street<\/strong> is a standout track, with urgent\nvocals, a catchy chorus and some great Cock Sparrer-like guitar. It wouldn\u2019t\nlook out of place on Rancid\u2019s classic album And Out Come The Wolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J.S.A.<\/strong> is about the trials of claiming benefits: \u201cWho would have thought I\u2019d end up here\/My future, intentions, J.S.A had no mention\u201d, while Monsters<\/strong> is a frantic examination of paranoia: \u201cNow, now, don\u2019t be scared\/It\u2019s all up there in your head.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grade 2 are still a young band, and they’re improving with every record. They’re planning to get in the van again to tour this album. On this evidence, their shows will be unmissable. 8\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
