Pic by Gavin Watson.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What A Fucking Nightmare<\/em> takes off like a runaway express train with the brief dystopian title track, and its pace never lets, with 16 blistering tracks in 36 minutes leaving you exhilarated and exhausted at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chisel ooze aggression from every pore, with Cal sounding like a pissed off Noddy Holder over a boot-stomping backdrop of swathing guitars and pummelling drums. It&#8217;s not just noise though, there&#8217;s plenty of musicality here too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cry Your Eyes Out<\/em> is an early standout. A furious takedown of toxic masculinity, it fumes: <em>&#8220;You can&#8217;t blame the kids\/You can&#8217;t blame the drink\/It&#8217;s your own fucking nature that&#8217;s the missing link.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Chisel &quot;Cry Your Eyes Out&quot; (Official Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RaXu_5PWxFc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The state of the country and those to blame for it is the subject of several songs. The furious <em>No Gimmicks<\/em>, anthemic <em>Ain&#8217;t Seen Nothing Yet<\/em> and searing <em>Evil By Evil<\/em> all have the same &#8216;us against them&#8217; message. The latter perhaps sums up their feeling best as Cal rages: <em>&#8220;Just you fucking wait\u2026&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chisel clearly don&#8217;t suffer fools gladly. Take <em>Bloodsucker<\/em>, where Cal tells the pub bore: <em>&#8220;I&#8217;m counting down the minutes &#8217;til you fuck off&#8221;<\/em>, or <em>Lying Little Rat (Propaganda)<\/em>, where duplicitious friends are the target of his ire as he rages <em>&#8220;you convince a lot of fuckers but you won&#8217;t fool me&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">All mouth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Living For Myself <\/em>and <em>Fuck &#8216;Em<\/em> are songs of defiance and self-belief, while <em>Nice To Meet You<\/em> calls out shit-chatters, or, as Cal succintly puts it &#8220;two faced cunt, all mouth no action&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not all angry though; there&#8217;s songs about brotherhood (<em>Those Days<\/em>), and facing up to responsibilities (<em>Cuts Like A Knife<\/em>), and the pace does slow a little towards the end, until <em>What I See<\/em> brings us to a close, with another warning about the estabishment: &#8220;<em>Blue or red, they don&#8217;t care about you\/Their money, their mansions and their suits.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What A Fucking Nightmare<\/em> is a step up on The Chisel&#8217;s first album <em>Retaliation<\/em>, and will be right up there in the end of year polls.
