SINGLE REVIEW: Charger – Watch Your Back/Stay Down (Pirates Press Records)

As the bass player with Californian band Rancid, Matt Freeman has become one of the biggest names in punk rock over the past 30 years.

So you know when he lends his talents to a new project, it’s going to be good. Such is the case with his side project, Charger.

Formed in 2018, it saw him join forces with guitarist Andrew McGee and drummer Jason Willer in a powerhouse East Bay trio which owes more to the punk-metal of Motorhead than any of the punk bands he’s been involved with.

They released a self-titled seven-song mini-album last year, and have now returned with two tracks on a 12in single.

The first song, Watch Your Back, was released at the back end of last year as a one-sided 12in pictured disc, and it showcases Freeman’s rasping voice, as well as his band’s foot-to-the-floor power.

Now it’s been paired with a new track, Stay Down, which shows they can pull off an impressive line in Led Zeppelin-style riffing, and some of the best drumming you’ll hear anywhere on another dirty rock ‘n’ roll banger.

The double A-side 12in is available on black, red or white vinyl, as a picture disc, and as a download, and you can get it from Pirates Press Records here.
